Pre-Treatment advice

Blood-Thinners

Blood-thinners including fish oils, ibuprofen, aspirin, and Ginkgo Biloba can increase the risk and longevity of bruises. Therefore, avoid blood-thinners 5 days before treatment.

Piercings

Remove lip piercings and clean the area at least 24-hours before treatment. This is to reduce the chance of infection.

Alcohol

Refrain from drinking alcohol 48 hours before a lip procedure to reduce the risk of bruising.

Required Aftercare Advice

Hydration

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, as this can aid in the healing process.

Alcohol

Refrain from consuming alcohol for 48 hours as alcohol dehydrates the body and can increase the risk of bruising.

Exercise

Strenuous exercise can increase your blood pressure, thus increasing the risk of swelling and bruising. Avoid for the first 24-48 hours post-treatment.

Advised Aftercare Advice

Ice Packs

Applying ice packs or cold compresses can help reduce swelling and bruising. However, use a thin cloth to avoid direct contact between the ice and your skin.

Pain Management

Should you wish to relieve discomfort, take paracetamol as directed by your practitioner.

Antihistamines

Taking antihistamines after lip filler may be recommended to manage swelling. Always check with your practitioner first.

Let's Add Context:

8 hours

As a general rule, swelling, bruising and discomfort should start to subside 8 hours after your treatment.

5/10

'Is it going to hurt?'

Think of the 5/10 rule. You may feel a little discomfort / pain, but it should never feel extremely painful or unbearable.

If the pain is reaching more than a 5/10 during or after your treatment, this could be a sign of something more serious.

Do not worry, inform your practitioner straight away and they will be able to help.

Frequently asked questions

Whilst swelling after a lip filler treatment is a common and expected side effect, it is usually temporary and minimal.

If you are concerned about persistent or excessive swelling you must contact your practitioner for specific advice.

"Russian lips" describes a specific style of lip augmentation, characterised by a fuller appearance. This injection technique creates a taller, flatter lip by enhancing the volume in the central of the lips.

There are many other injection styles such as a natural enhancement, defined lip border (the Vermilion Border), and a Lip Flip which can involve Wrinkle-Relaxing injections instead of Dermal Filler.

Also known as vascular compromise or vascular event, Vascular Occlusion, a is a rare but serious complication. It can occur post-dermal filler treatments.

It is defined as an obstruction or blockage of blood vessels. This reduces/ completely restricts blood flow in the affected area and beyond into other facial areas.

In extreme cases and if not treated, this complication can cause tissue damage and necrosis (death of tissue).

Whilst being rare, if you have any concerns you must contact your practitioner.

Longevity of results depend on factors such as the type of filler used, individual metabolism, age and the individual's lifestyle.

As a general idea, dermal filler can last between 6-12 months. Some brands report longevity of up to 24 months.

Your practitioner can provide a more accurate estimate when assessing the factors above.
